This image is witness to the vulnerable time a foal takes her first draw of milk. It is vital that her instinctual desire to live resonates with the precarious timing and positioning of her body and the disposition of the mare. Too much human contact can disrupt willingness to live and nurture at times; one truly feels like bowing to mother nature seeing it all unfold. I wanted to represent a different view of a horse, one that embraces the primal and innate quality that is so immense in their beings. This mare has a warning patience in her stare, yet there is an uncomforting sensation I have capturing this moment through a lens. Some things that are documented feel like they shouldn’t be – perhaps that is why I am drawn to this view.
